I came across a similar situation several years ago and my initial reaction was the same as Michael's. The justification for the age column and the nightly update was the need to query by age. The table in question and the queries were someone else's responsibility, so I didn't pursue alternatives.
One of those probably would have been an index on a virtual column consisting of the month and day of birth only. An index on that would make it possible to reduce the nightly update to those with a birthday on the current date. Another possibility might have been to calculate date ranges for the desired age(s) in the query or in a function called by the query. Partitioning on date of birth year(s) also might have aided query performance.
