I am looking for career shift towards FI/CO/ business Analyst in SAP.
But I am still in dilemma. I would appreciate your honest review of my profile and input from seasoned player.
At present I work as a Sr. Financial Analyst at well known large corporation in US. My core experience is in Corporate Finance/Operational Accounting. I have my BS degree in Accounting & Business Management, and I am USC. Though I do not have CPA but I work on high level Accounting like SEC filing, preparation of SCF & other financial statement etc. Knowledge of Accounting and real business process is not an issue here. I would say I have domain experience of 10+ years. ( Too old for FI/CO consultant?)
I have also gone thru typical unauthorized SAP training center to learn FI/CO module two years back. I have not found anything challenging to understand, or may be instructor was not so good in sharing his expertise. I was surprised when I shoot some question to instructor which we faced (at my work place) when we acquired another company. It was not a hard question especially when instructor was boasting about his ICWA-CA from India, but he was not able to come up with any thought process in scenario like that.
After completing course, I peeked into this consulting recruitment business by many mom and pop consulting co. Experience was not so good. No professionalism from recruiter as well as interviewer (many). Though I am from India, I have never worked their and my experience was shocking. They were expecting to lie too much and wanted to change my resume up side down. I refuse to do that and they kind of start loosing interest in me. In many instance it happened that during work hours I took time off for phone interview and guy on other side never showed up! Some time when I got deep in discussion to explain guy how we should deal with xyz situation in real business scenario and explain typical accounting business flow, I kind of sense it that guy was not able to appreciate my business knowledge and stick to too many bookish question floating on internet.
I was very frustrated but luckily I got entry level offer form big consulting firm. But the same time I was going thru some life event so my bad luck I have to let it go it was not feasible at that time.
Fast forward 2 years and I am thinking again to go back to SAP. Yes I will need to brush up my skill. (different question) I don’t know how difficult it would be. But feel sad that I have to go thru same dirty trick and process which I am not used to.
My current place provide job security ( Yea I know there is nothing call job security in US) but zero progress. I have two options. Break this comfort zone and look for another job (it’s high time) in same area, or shift towards SAP (back to square one?), or one more concentrate of my CPA. (Ultimate goal)
For me advantage I see towards SAP FI/CO after my brief jobs search, visiting various forum etc that there is one section of job holders do not possess functional knowledge that may come with real life experience and core knowledge of subject matter. Now I feel if they have survived on job then if demand exists for candidate like me then I should have better chance to excel in this field. But this is all my assumption and I am not sure how crowded SAP FICO in US now days.
So I ask you to all of you what would you suggest? Should I proceed or not? The easiest and safest route I see when big consulting co adds you as a number. I know if I go via that route I would not gain anything in term of salary. But it can open some avenue in future.
