    Hi,

    An R3 instance is an administrative unit that groups together components of an R/3 system that offer one or more services. An R/3 instance can provide the ff services :
    Dialog
    Update
    Background processing
    Printing

    An application server is a computer in which atleast one R/3 instance runs
    Note : there can be two ( or more ) R/3 instances on an application server
