if instead of doing "safely remove" in Windows and just unplugging a portable hard drive, will it cause any problems? Assuming no files are being transferred or copied. Could it corrupt files, or alter the MD5 checksum of any files?

I have a 2TB drive that I bought about 10 months ago. About a week ago, I got the following message on my machine during booting: Loading Operating System... Boot from CD/DVD: DISK BOOT FAILURE...
