What is the difference between transaction codes Al08 and SM04?

Transaction Code SM04

1. T-code SM04 display the list of the users which are currently logged on to the instance. Also, the total number of users and sessions are given at the bottom of the list.
2. In other words, t-code SM04 display a user overview for one dispatcher. 

Transaction Code AL08

1. T-code AL08 display the list of all the users who are logged on to the system globally or for all the instances in the system which are active.
2. In other words, t-code AL08 display users in the entire system.
