Difference between JUnit and TestNG

Updated Jan 17, 2020

Software testing refers to an essential phase of the software development lifecycle. In most cases, it involves the finding and identification of bugs in a given program. In terms of software development, testing comprises of many processes including unit testing, functional testing, integration testing, performance testing, acceptance testing, etc. In Java, several types of testing are being put to use by programmers and end-users. JUnit and TestNG serve the most popular frameworks in Java for unit testing.

TestNG vs. JUnit

Basis of Difference JUnit TestNG
Nature It is a testing framework that is open-source in nature. It is useful for writing and running tests. TestNG is quite similar to Junit but showcases advanced features and functionality.
Support for annotations It is non-supportive of advanced annotations. It offers support for unique and advanced annotations alike.
Simultaneous execution of tests Junit cannot support parallel test execution. TestNG allows for several and different threads to run at the same time in a parallel fashion.
Group test features Junit does not support group test features. Group test features are innovative additions to TestNG.
Parameterized testing Configuration of parameterized testing and further processing is comparatively easy in Junit.   Time consuming, cumbersome, and difficult, parameterized testing is not an easy task with TestNG.
Writing of test cases. Various modules are needed for writing test cases in Junit. More comfortable to configure and write TestNG is better than JUnit in this case.

What is JUnit?

A widely used Java framework, JUnit, is handy for running and writing tests. Junit is useful for creating Selenium WebDriver testing in Java. Junit is used as a testing framework in alliance with Java Programming Language.

This automation framework is famous for unit testing as well as UI testing alike. It helps define the flow of execution of programs in unison with different annotations.

  • Originally based on a unit testing framework attributed to Smalltalk, SUnit is the facto benchmark for software testing in Java.
  • The very first version of JUnit was launched in 1997 and now has many tools. It is found in various language as well.
  • JUnit 5, the latest version of Junit, is a remake of JUnit in Java 8.
  • This version of Junit has been redesigned for overcoming the limitations of earlier JUnit versions.
  • JUnit is non-supportive of parallel test execution.
  • JUnit aids the development of test-driven programming in a big way.

What is TestNG?

TestNG is another Java framework wherein tests have to be organized in classes. TestNG takes care of the limitations of JUnit through extra functionalities and advanced annotations, especially those that do not find support in JUnit.

  • TestNG reuses similar test class instance (just like Junit) for all kinds of test methods. TestNG offers a lot of flexibility in the manner in which it passes parameters into different unit tests.
  • Yet another feature that keeps this framework apart is its ability to put test methods in Java groups.
  • Besides, TestNG offers different methods of executing tests through separate threads. This helps developers test methods/classes in parallel ways.
  • TestNG permits many threads to run at the same time and simultaneously. This gives rise to reduced execution time and decreased verification time for taking care of multi-threaded codes in different applications. With more tests being executed concurrently, the overall execution time is reduced significantly.

The key difference between TestNG Vs. JUnit

  1. Though both JUnit and TestNG are testing frameworks that are annotations based, and use similar annotations like @BeforeClass, @AfterClass, @Test, etc. TestNG takes care of the limitations of JUnit via additional functionalities as well as individual annotations such as @AfterTest, @BeforeGroups, @BeforeTest, @AfterGroups, @AfterSuite, @BeforeSuite, etc. These advanced annotations are not found in Junit.
  2. TestNG is passes parameters more flexibly into unit tests. This makes the entire process of the configuration of parameterized tests a lot more convenient in TestNG than what it is in JUnit. Junit is more time-consuming in configuring parameterized tests.
  3. Group test features are found in Junit. However, TestNG offers this powerful feature that allows the performance of groupings of diverse test methods. It executes multiple different tests by using diverse annotation “Groups.”

Conclusion

TestNG and Junit have large user groups in the Java community. TestNG provides additional powerful features in comparison to Junit. We will help you understand the differences and features between Junit and TestNG in further details as early as possible.

The basic difference between JUnit and TestNG are as follows-

    TestNG

    JUnit

Advanced and special annotations are supported by TestNG.

Advanced and special annotations are not supported by JUnit.

    Parallel tests can run simultaneously.

You cannot run multiple tests at once.

    TestNG supports Group Test feature.

There is no concept of Group Test in JUnit

Configuring parameterized tests is time-consuming and difficult in TestNG.

Configuring parameterised tests is easier in JUnit.

Test cases are written easily in TestNG.

You need several modules to write test case.
