dbms_type environment variable SAP does not exist

Updated May 18, 2018

While trying to upgrade with Software Update Manager (SUM), the tools stop with an error in phase MOD_SELROADMAP/SUMCHK_EXTBUILD.

With a short message:

"Last error code set: Environment variable 'dbms_type' does not exist"

I have also attached the screenshot below:

To resolve this issue please check whether all the steps followed by you for upgrading is correct according to SUM guide. Also review some points listed below:

    • Check whether the SUM version used by you is correct or not
    • Also check whether the URL used by you for updrading is correct or not
    • Make sure that the command "confighostagent" is executed with the correct user

And if the points mentioned above are correct and you still facing the issue than please check for newer SUM patch released, reset the SUM according to SUM guide steps and restart with latest correct patch

The problem you are facing commonly occurs in phase SUMCHK_EXTBUILD. There are multiple reasons for this error, Some important ones are listed below:

    • The Software Update Manager (SUM) version used by you must not be valid for the upgrading or you must be using a version which was released for some specific upgrades for example SUM SP 15.
    • Command "./startup confighostagent <SID>" must be executed with wrong user
    • You must be using the wrong URL for example: using Java URL for a dual stack system
