I have this query that can we extend tablespace when backup is running if not why?
Please share your views, so i can proceed further.
Thanks in advance.
No we cannot do it during backup process is in progress. A backup is running but the system operation is never paused or stopped. So, if the tablespace where data is getting stored need another datafile or more space and couldn't get and this will stop the system from operating. This is a contradicting scenario. So, you can always extend tablespace whther backup is running or not. Further to this if you are not using any flash backup (SAN) tool , that menas you are using DB backup tools over network. So any data which is not backed up now will be backed up during the next incremental backup schedule.
You can extend the tablespace at any time irrespective of backup status. But when backup is running , in urgent scenario you have to go for resize (not for extension) as per sap reccomendation. The reason for not going for tablespace extension is pretty simple. During tablespace extension, it adds a new line with path of new datafile in control file. So if the backup is already started, new file will not be backed up and backup will be inconsistent
